Customer Reviews: Not very helpful for true beginners September 14, 2008 V. Crandall (London, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I purchased this book with the hope that there would be step-by-step instructions and demonstrations for specific projects. The steps of the projects are broken down, but without any written commentary or directions for technique on how to achieve the effect of realism. Nor do the steps indicate which colors the artist used in each step. Perhaps this would be sufficient for experienced painters, but for a novice like myself I found the book to be quite unhelpful. The projects are beautiful, and if you know what you're doing then this might be the book for you. If you're looking for more guidance and hand-holding, this book is not for you.
I unfortunately made the mistake of eagerly purchasing four Walter Foster books (Clouds & Skies, Sunsets, Landscapes, and The Ocean) and even though they are all written by different authors they are all exactly the same in their lack of clear explanations and detailed step-by-step instructions.
