Poor US Phonics August 19, 2008 I. A. D. Smith (Uphill, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My daughter loves Dora, and loves the Usborne UK phonics books. I figured these would be a match made in heaven...well, maybe not quite that good, but a good combination. The books are US phonics, and IMHO, not as good reading as the Usborne books. They are good books, good to use and read, but can't say they are as good as other phonics resources.
Fab Set December 9, 2007 S. Vincent 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I think this is a great set. I would say that it is probably suitable for a Y1 child or a very bright reception child, They need to have had a bit of reading practice as there are quite a few words on each page. They are good to read to a younger child and have them point out the odd key word and spot the phonic sounds as you read though. They are excelent value for money, and I will be purchasing set 2 as my daughter has almost finished set 1!

I bought these for my daughter who is almost five and in Reception year at school. She loves this set already (we've only had them a few days!) and can't wait to read them. Each book focuses on a different sound, eg 'short e' or 'plurals', and all the words within the story relate to those sounds, which helps to re-inforce the concepts. The inside front cover is really good for parents, because it lists words to look out for in the story, other 'key' words, and other more complicated ones. I think this shows that they are really well thought out. My daughter loves to spot these words on the way through, and anything that expands her vocab and renews her interest in reading is fine by me. Many of the words used are part of her 'keyword' learning at school so she thinks it's great that she can read quite a lot of the story by herself, and it's a real confidence boost for her. All in all, well worth the money.

Great set of books that cover phonics and give children something different to read than the reading books from school, may need some help but worth it to see son/daughter reading and gaining confidence with phonics, their isnt much books with phonics on the market, nice to see one with (Dora) someone the children can relate to.
